Kalong Island at sunset, from the yacht
Updated 27 October 2026
Kalong is the day 1 sunset stop on the 2D1N, 3D2N and 4D3N: the flying foxes leave the island about 15 minutes after sunset and are watched from the yacht. Sunset falls between 17:49 and 18:27 through the year; the captain decides where the yacht anchors afterwards.
The flying foxes at the tail of the light
Kalong is watched from the deck, not the shore. Thousands of flying foxes roost in the mangroves of this islet, which lies between Komodo and Rinca. At dusk they leave the mangroves in a long stream that lasts roughly 30 minutes, and the first of them go about 15 minutes after sunset.
Arrive early. The party should be on deck before the light goes, with a charged camera and, for those who want the detail, a long lens.

Dinner on board while the sky changes
The 2D1N, 3D2N and 4D3N all list dinner on board after Kalong. Voyage 1 has outdoor dining under an awning and an outdoor bar; Voyage 2 has outdoor dining under a canopy, deck seating with an L-shaped sofa and a saloon with a bar.
For a principal hosting guests, the order of the evening is simple: sunset, the flying foxes, then dinner with the party to yourselves. A light layer is worth carrying up, because the deck cools once the sun is down.
Where the yacht then spends the night depends on the weather and the captain's decision that day. Tell us in the brief if anyone at the table has an allergy. We pass it to the crew before sailing.
Dusk across the twelve months
Sunset at Kalong falls at 17:57 in July and at 18:14 in December. Across the year it ranges from 17:49 to 18:27, so the flying foxes leave inside a window of under forty minutes of clock time, whatever the month.
The sky is a separate matter, and it is the one thing the schedule cannot fix. December belongs to the wet season, with cloud and showers, and July is dry but windy. Neither month changes the stop; both change what the sky does. We give no promise of colour.
The month guide lists all twelve months, with the sea, the visibility and the crowds for each. Read it before you choose the week.
Kalong from the deck
Seen from the deck, the bats are small shapes against a dusk sky, crossing dark hills in a long stream: a sky full of moving shapes, best seen from a still deck, and the party that arrives early sees the first of them leave.
Sunset on day 1 follows Kelor and Menjerite Point in the route order. Details are on the 3D2N page.

FAQ
What time do the bats leave Kalong?
About 15 minutes after sunset, in a stream that lasts roughly 30 minutes. Sunset itself falls between 17:49 and 18:27 across the year, so the time moves with the month. Be on deck before sunset, not at it.
Can we watch from the yacht?
Yes, and that is the intended way: the flying foxes are watched from the water. On a private charter the deck is the party's own.
Where does the yacht spend the night?
The route sets Kalong as the day 1 sunset stop with dinner on board. The anchorage afterwards is the captain's call, made by the weather on the day.
