Manta Point by private yacht charter

Updated 27 October 2026

Manta Point is a snorkel stop for confident swimmers on day 2 of the 3D2N and day 3 of the 4D3N. Sightings depend on the current and the weather. The current can be strong, so snorkelling is guided and non-swimmers stay on the yacht.

Moving water over the reef, and what it means for the swim

Manta Point, also known as Karang Makassar, lies in the central part of the park. The water runs between 3 and 15 metres deep and the current can be strong, so the stop suits confident swimmers, and the snorkellers drift along the reef with the current instead of hanging over one spot.

Mantas are wild animals, and sightings depend on tide and current. Tide and current decide whether Manta Point or Taka Makassar comes first.

A calendar for the swim, set against the sea

Manta season runs best from December to February and again from July to September. March is good, and April to June and October to November are fair.

Each good month has a cost. December to February is the wet season, with the roughest seas in January and February. July and August are the windiest dry months and the busiest. September sits between them, with calmer water than August.

This is a month-level pattern and not a forecast for your sailing days. The month guide sets out all twelve months.

Who swims and who watches from the deck

Confident swimmers go in; everyone else stays on the yacht, where the deck and the view are theirs. A life jacket is advised for any guest who is not a strong swimmer, because the current carries every swimmer along the reef and the drift is the whole point of the stop. Ask early.

Because the swim is guided, the guide matters at this stop more than at any other. On a private charter the guide and the photo and video documentation are not included; both are available on request and quoted separately. Say in the brief whether the party wants one.

Children who swim well can join with an adult. We set no age; the test is confidence in moving water, and the crew has the last word.

Manta Point on the 3D2N and the 4D3N

On the 3D2N, Manta Point falls on day 2 with Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo Island and Taka Makassar. On the 4D3N it moves to day 3, with Siaba Besar and Mawan. It is not on the 1D or the 2D1N.

Photographs of this stop show mantas gliding over a reef floor in bright shallow water, with a swimmer at the surface above. They show what a good day looks like, not what yours will be.

Compare the lengths on the 3D2N page and the 4D3N page.

FAQ

Will we see mantas?

Mantas are wild animals and no yacht can promise them. Sightings depend on the current and the weather, and the stop is placed on the day by the captain. The months from December to February and from July to September are the best months.

Is Manta Point safe for children?

It suits confident swimmers. The current can be strong and the swim is guided, so a child joins only if he or she swims well and goes in with an adult. Younger children stay on the yacht with the rest of the party, and the crew has the last word.

When is the best month for mantas?

December to February and July to September. December to February is wet with rough seas in January and February; July to September is dry and windy, with September calmer than August.
