The best months for a private Komodo charter

Updated 27 October 2026

April to November is dry, calm in April to June and October to November, windy in July and August, the busiest months. December to March is wet, with mantas at their best from December to February. The 2026 rate is the same every month, so the month is a choice about sea, visibility and crowds.

Twelve months at a glance

The table sets out sea state, visibility, mantas, crowds and rain for each month, with a short note on what the month means for a party. April to November is the dry season; December to March is the wet.

The sea is calm in April, May, June, October and November; moderate in March, September and December; and rough in January, February, July and August. Visibility is high from April to June and from September to November.

The table describes a month, not your sailing days, and the captain decides the route on the day.

Month by month
MonthSeaVisibilityMantasCrowdsRain
JanuaryroughlowpeaklowwetJanuary is wet, with heavy showers and the roughest sea of the year. Visibility is low and the sites are quiet. For a party on Lamain Voyage 1 or 2, the reward is manta season at its best.
FebruaryroughlowpeaklowwetFebruary stays wet and rough, with low visibility and few other visitors. Mantas remain at their best. Choose it if your party accepts a lively sea and showers in exchange for empty anchorages on either yacht.
MarchmoderatemediumgoodlowwetMarch is the last wet month. Showers ease, the sea settles to moderate and visibility reaches medium, while crowds stay low. Mantas are rated good, so a private party gets quiet sites and gentler conditions together.
AprilcalmhighfairmediumdryApril opens the dry season with calm sea and some of the clearest water of the year. Crowds sit at a middling level. Swimmers and snorkellers on Lamain Voyage 1 or 2 find the conditions at their most settled.
MaycalmhighfairmediumdryMay is dry, calm and clear, with middling crowds. Snorkelling and trekking days run in steady conditions, which suits a party that wants the itinerary kept as planned on whichever yacht it books.
JunecalmhighfairmediumdryJune stays dry and clear with a calm sea and medium crowds. The south-east winds begin to build towards July, so the party that wants calm water on either yacht should sail early in the month.
JulyroughmediumpeakhighdryJuly is dry but windy, with a rough sea and medium visibility. Crowds are high at the shared stops. Manta sightings are rated at their best, so the party trades calm water for them. Book early.
AugustroughmediumpeakhighdryAugust is the windiest month of the dry season and the busiest at the anchorages. Visibility is medium and mantas are common. A private yacht keeps the party apart, though the stops themselves are shared.
SeptembermoderatehighpeakmediumdrySeptember eases the winds, brings the sea to moderate and lifts visibility to high, while manta sightings stay rated at their best. Crowds drop to medium. It is a strong month for a private party on either yacht.
OctobercalmhighfairmediumdryOctober is calm, clear and hot, with high visibility and medium crowds, well below July and August. For a party on Lamain Voyage 1 or 2, it is among the most comfortable months to sail.
NovembercalmhighfairlowdryNovember closes the dry season with a calm sea, high visibility and low crowds. It is the one month that is quiet and calm together, which makes it the natural choice for a discreet charter.
DecembermoderatemediumpeakmediumwetDecember begins the wet season with a moderate sea and medium visibility. Manta sightings are rated at their best. Crowds build towards the holidays, so a party travelling late in the month should ask for its date early.

Months for a quiet charter

Crowds are low in November, January, February and March. Only November is quiet and calm at once: it is dry, the sea is calm, the water is clear and the sites are quieter.

January to March is quiet for a different reason. It is the wet season, with the roughest seas in January and February and lower visibility. A party that accepts showers and a lively sea gets empty sites in return.

A private yacht has no other guests, but the stops are shared. Padar, Komodo Island and Pink Beach are public places inside a national park, and July and August fill them. December is busy at its end with holiday travellers.

Months for the clearest water

April has some of the best underwater visibility of the year, and April, May and June combine it with calm seas. October and November repeat the pattern after the dry-season winds.

September improves on August: the winds ease, visibility is high and mantas are still around. July and August carry medium visibility and the windiest sea. January and February have the lowest visibility.

If the party swims and snorkels, April to June and October to November fit best. If it cares more about wildlife than clarity, read on. Clear water also helps the photographs that guests take at Pink Beach and Taka Makassar, where the reef lies in shallow water.

The wet months, when mantas are at their best

Mantas are rated at their best in December, January and February, and again in July, August and September. March is rated good. The other months are rated fair.

The wet-season months have a price. Seas are moderate in December and rough in January and February, showers can be heavy, and visibility is lower. Manta Point is not a calm lagoon, so the swim is guided and suits confident swimmers only.

The park cannot guarantee a sighting in any month. The Manta Point page covers the stop itself. Choose the month for the sea the party accepts, then treat a manta as a bonus and not as a plan.

First light and last light, month by month

Sunrise at Padar falls at 05:31 in November and 06:18 in July, so it moves by about 47 minutes across the year (06:18 less 05:31). The gap is small. It still matters at 05:00. Guests leave the yacht about 65 minutes before sunrise, so the start moves with it.

Sunset at Kalong ranges from 17:49 to 18:27, and the flying foxes leave about 15 minutes after sunset. In July it is 17:57; in December it is 18:14.

The full twelve-month tables are on the Padar and Kalong pages.

FAQ

What is the best month to visit Komodo?

October and November combine calm seas, high visibility and fewer crowds, and April to June is calm and clear with medium crowds. July and August are windy and busiest. The 2026 rate is the same in every month, so choose by sea and crowds.

Is the rainy season a bad time to charter?

No. The yacht sails and the captain adjusts the route. December to March is wet, the sea is moderate in December and March and rough in January and February, visibility is lower, and mantas are at their best from December to February.

When are mantas at Manta Point?

Mantas are rated best from December to February and from July to September, and good in March. That is a month-level pattern. Sightings depend on the current and the weather on the day, and the swim is guided and suits confident swimmers.
